Dax Tojeiro, zo bouwt u uw eigen stukje racehistorie...

© DJ Sportscars

Part 1: Our Tojeiro?

More than 1000 late-model DAX Tojeiros have been built…..but no two are the same. And we’re not just talking about trim details here - they have, different engines and different gearboxes. The prospective Tojeiro builder is spoilt for choice. Obviously, budget will play a part, but our car will serve as a DAX demonstrator and has to be something rather special. Mind you, most of the cars built by DJ’s customers are rather special as well.

The Chevrolet big block in an earlier DAX demonstrator

The DAX Tojeiro uses a traditional hooped ladder frame, reinforced by the unique DAX backbone brace. This simple structural element, the work of DAX designer Peter Walker and development engineer Gary Saunders, makes the traditional chassis almost as rigid as the most exotic backbone chassis available. Also, it doesn’t intrude as much on the interior space….and it does give you somewhere to hang those classic side exhaust pipes.

Then there is the choice of engine. We could fit a tuned Rover V8 or the most popular option, a 350 cu in Chevrolet ‘small block’, but DAX already has a small block-powered demonstrator.

Other options would be a Jaguar V12 or a Ford V8, but we’re going with the ultimate…. a 502 cubic inch ( 8 litre!) Chevrolet ‘big block’. This engine will deliver an effortless 400 bhp plus, with stump-pulling torque. Frankly, it hardly needs a gearbox, but we’ll be using a Tremec unit.

The Tojeiro uses pre-XJ40 Jaguar XJ6/XJ12/XJS suspension parts to handle all that sound and fury, but we won’t be using a donor. For this high end project, all the parts which would be sourced from a donor have been obtained new or reconditioned from some of the many Jaguar specialists which serve the classic car market.

So that only leaves the question of cost. Purchase the LX pack from DJ Sportscars and you could have a Tojeiro on the road for as little as £15,000, although the average customer spends around £20,000 on his dream machine. Of course, you can spend more - as we will be - depending on your choice of engine.

Oh yes! There is one more question. What colour are we going to paint our car? I think we’ll leave that decision until later.
