Dax Rush, zo bouwt u uw eigen droom...
© DJ Sportscars

Part 1: Which kit?
The kit-car builder is spoilt for choice. There are kits for everything, from motorcycle-engined three-wheelers, through mid-engined supercars to giant-tyred off-roaders. You pay your money and take your choice - well no…actually, it's better to choose first. One of the most popular styles of kit is the open-wheeled, two-seater, clubman-style sportscar. Hardly surprising, since it can be argued that Colin Chapman's simple yet brilliant concept launched the kit-car market in the first place.

A line-up of customer cars at the Stoneleigh show
DAX's offering in this packed market sector is the highly-regarded Rush, and that's the choice of our 'customer' for Patrick's build. (Actually, the car will see duty as an additional DAX demonstrator.)
The Rush De Dion demonstrator Mind you, choosing a Rush over one of the many other clubman-style kits on the market might even be the easiest bit. Then it's a question of 'what Rush do I build'. There's the choice of rear suspension - de dion or independent; of two-wheel or four-wheel drive; of engine - the ubiquitous Ford Pinto, accessible Rover V8 or fabulous Ford Cosworth are the most common, but by no means the only, choices; and level of trim - after all, you can make a kit-car into pretty much anything you want….but then isn't that the whole point?

The Rush de Dion demonstrator
In this instance, our customer is on a budget, but he wants the best he can get for his money. The obvious choice is the DAX Rush De Dion LX. DJ Sportscars International stunned visitors to Britain's biggest kit-car show at Stoneleigh earlier this year by announcing a budget version of its new Rush De Dion at a component price of less than £6,000.
Mind you, there's a little bit in the budget for one or two cosmetic extras. We'll give our car chrome suspension and a set of budget-priced alloy wheels. Oh yes, then there's the choice of colour - let's build a red one.
